ART IN PLACE

Public Murals & Art Projects

Part of NEAR’s creative placemaking commitment includes occasionally commissioning public MURALS and developing ART PROJECTS in the community as part of our effort to highlight the grace, capacity, and creativity in the Near Eastside. Sometimes crafted by professional local artists and sometimes created by students, public art diversely expresses love for this community.

10 East Arts

In December 2018, John Boner Neighborhood Centers received a $4.3 million grant from Lilly Endowment to further the neighborhood’s vision to once again make 10th Street a thriving Main Street in the heart of the Near Eastside. This grant was a part of Lilly Endowment’s Strengthening Indianapolis Through Arts and Cultural Innovation initiative. Utilizing distressed properties acquired via Inspire 10th Street, LLC (a partnership of NEAR, JBNC and Englewood CDC), the goal is to create a vibrant, thriving, equitable neighborhood district in which creativity, arts, heritage and culture enrich the quality of life for existing Eastside residents and visitors. See the https://10eastarts.org website for current projects.

Community Art Peace

NEAR worked with the Arts Council of Indianapolis in a National Endowment for the Arts-funded initiative in 2018 to bring together local artists, Near Eastside residents, and law enforcement personnel to create initiatives that could/will prevent and reduce crime in our community.
